About

Tangchundaeseong Fortress was built in 1712 during the Joseon Dynasty to improve the defense of Hanyangdoseong, the Seoul City Wall, and the Bukhansanseong Fortress. Hongjimun Gate was built during the reign of King Sukjong, the 19th king of the Joseon Dynasty. Legend has it that King Sukjong wrote “Hongjimun” on the gate's original name-board himself and the gate was called Hongjimun thereafter. After passing through Hongjimun Gate, Tangchundaeseong Fortress comes into view. These days, the Tangchundaeseong area offers one of the most beloved hiking trails in Seoul. The hiking trail has a gentle slope for leisurely walks.
